County seeks volunteers to help remove exotic plants on National Public Lands Day
Sarasota County is seeking volunteers to help celebrate National Public Lands Day on Saturday, Sept. 30, by clearing exotic plant species from county-owned sites. From 8 a.m.-noon, staff from Sarasota County Natural Resources and Parks and Recreation will guide volunteers in the removal of Brazilian pepper and air potato from the following four locations:
· Pocono Trails Preserve
189 Pocono Trail, Nokomis (just southeast of U.S. 41 and the bridge over Dona Bay)
· Lemon Bay Park and Environmental Center
570 Bay Park Blvd, Englewood
· Phillippi Estate Park
5500 S. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota
· The portion of the county’s rails to trails corridor behind Nokomis Community Park
234 E. Nippino Trail, Nokomis
National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance America’s public lands. Sept. 30 marks the first year that Sarasota will participate in the 13th annual event, which is a program of the National Environmental Education and Training Foundation.
During last year’s National Public Lands Day, nearly 90,000 volunteers built trails and bridges, planted trees and plants, and removed trash and invasive plants. In the process, they also learned about the importance of public lands to the nation’s environmental, economic and social health.
“Invasive plants have a tendency to encroach on and take over native habitats,” said Public Use Coordinator Brie Ondercin. “Some invasive plant species are toxic and harmful for other plants, animals and even humans. Removing them keeps them from spreading farther throughout the county’s natural areas and into people’s backyards.”
The first 25 volunteers at each site will receive a Discover Natural Sarasota County T-shirt. All volunteers will receive gardening gloves and water. Restrooms or portable toilets will be available at each location, along with dumpsters to place the removed exotic plants and garbage bags to collect trash and other debris. Participants must provide their own hand tools, such as clippers and shears, and should also bring water, bug spray, sunscreen, hat (optional) and sunglasses.
In case of rain, the event will move to Saturday, Oct. 21.
Pre-registration is required to participate. For information about how to pre-register, contact the Sarasota County Call Center at 941-861-5000 and ask for Natural Resources.

Re: Coastal Clean Up 2006
Leave nothing but footprints on island
I am a Mote Marine volunteer on the Sarasota Bay Explorer, a tour boat that makes three trips a day from Mote to Big Edwards Island. The volunteer takes the passengers for a short nature walk. This summer, the island has been strewn with trash bags, beer bottles, soda cans, etc. Not only is it a health hazard, it's extremely unsightly and is embarrassing to those of us who live in and love Sarasota. Most of our passengers are tourists, and this is definitely not an image we want them to leave with. We're famous for our pristine beaches and parks. Those who take a boat to Big Edwards Island should take their trash home with them. Leave nothing but footprints. Stephen Dickman Sarasota Re: Coastal Clean Up 2006
All,
Just wanted to let you know of an upcoming event in your neighborhood... On Saturday, September 30th from 8 a.m. to noon, we will be celebrating National Public Lands Day with events to be held at Pocono Trails Preserve and along the "Rails to Trails" corridor behind Nokomis Community Park. The event at Pocono will consist of air potato vine removal and trash pick up. Similar activities are planned along the Rails to Trails corridor. See the attached press release and map for more information. Also, we are getting closer to selecting an official name for Pocono Trails Preserve. Of the nominations we received, it's no surprise that Pocono Trails Preserve was the most popular. The next step in the process will be for me to compile a list of all the nominations, and pertinent historical information and present it to our Environmentally Sensitive Lands Committee (ESLOC) at their 9/7 meeting. From this, they will formally make a recommendation which will go to the Board of County Commissioners for approval in late September or early October (date is not final yet). At that point, it will become official. So, stay tuned and I'll try to keep you posted as we make our way through the long, drawn-out process. That's about it for now. Hope everyone's having an enjoyable summer. See you soon. Sincerely, Jeff Weber, Land Manager Pocono Trails Preserve 861-6241 jweber@scgov.net Re: Coastal Clean Up 2006
It Should be Pocono Trail Perserve (singular)
Re: Coastal Clean Up 2006
I'm glad to see you're gathering volunteers for the Coastal clean up. I hope you have done this as well for these two years that passed. You might wanna ask the students of a nearby university to help. If they volunteer they get credits for extra curricular activities.

You might have a point but I do think some students will prefer to do their stuff instead of earning some credits working. Anyway, there's the Sarasota county Argosy university quite near the shore so there will be no need for transportation means.
