Re: Midnight Pass Information

MIDNIGHT PASS NEWS 10/27/08
We still need your help
"A new development"
Dear Midnight Pass Supporter,
Earlier this month I wrote you to tell you of a most important election for County Commission coming up in November. Carolyn Mason, a strong supporter of reopening Midnight Pass is running against Jono Miller, a long time opponent of pass opening efforts. This election could very well be the lynch pin of pass reopening efforts. If Mason wins we have a good chance of securing the permits and moving forward with the project. If she loses, we lose, its that simple.
A couple of weeks ago I asked for your help and you gave it. Midnight Pass supporters responded generously to our plea for Carolyn's campaign. Over $8000 was sent in and she is most grateful.
This will be a close race. She can win but there are no votes to spare.
We are now a week away from election day, early voting has already started, and a new wrinkle has developed. At the eleventh hour a third party candidate, one with not the slightest chance of winning the race, has decided he is all of a sudden a big Midnight Pass supporter.
Now, we welcome all of the support we can get and this fellow, Mr. Mullarkey, seems like a nice guy, but this is blatent opportunism of the worst kind. For the first six months of his campaign he never once mentioned Midnight Pass. Now that he sees a constituant base he is trying to peel off some of it for his ill fated campaign (he is polling in the teens).
"The simple reality is that if you are voting for Mr. Mularkey in support of Midnight Pass opening you are actually voting against Midnight Pass. Every vote for him is in effect a vote for Miller and risks dooming pass opening efforts."
This is pretty straight forward: If Miller is elected to the Sarasota County Commission the balance on the board will shift and Midnight Pass will not be reopened.
Read this:
Thursday, 10/02/08, at a local business group luncheon Candidate Miller happened to sit next to a friend of mine who is strong supporter of Midnight Pass reopening. After a little small talk my friend asked Miller how he felt about the efforts to secure the needed permits to reopen Midnight Pass. Without a moments hesitation Miller stated he opposed reopening the pass. Only when my friend made it clear that he supported pass reopening did he back off and waffle on the subject, leaving little doubt as to where he would stand in a vote to fund the pass reopening after securing the needed permits. That goes along with the statements in his online blog and in guest editorials that not only does he not support Pass reopening but that he feels the sitting county commissioners exceeded their authority by moving forward with permit applications without involving himself and others like him in the process. This even after numerous public hearings and forums were held prior to the commission voting to move to secure the needed permits from the state.
If we don't help Carolyn Mason (CarolynJMason.org) and she loses this race we are done. PERIOD.
This will be a close race. She can win but there are no votes to spare.
We are very close to the finish line here, don't falter. Help us make this final push so that when the permits are issued our supporters on the County Commission will have the necessary votes to see the job through to completion and this environmental wrong will finally be righted.

Bob Waechter
